The Lance and the Veil: an adventure in the time of Christ

“[a] richly imagined novel… A big, bold Biblical saga to fire the Christian imagination.”

Kirkus Reviews

Ver&Long

On the fateful road to Calvary, his part was cruelty; hers was compassion. Veronica wiped the face of her Lord moments before His death. Longinus pierced his captive’s side, then declared, “Truly, this man was the Son of God.”

LV_EasterThe Lance and the Veil imagines how these two witnesses to salvation came to their moment in history. Kevin Rush weaves imperial history, Holy Scripture and forgotten Christian folklore into a fast-paced, romantic adventure that uplifts, educates, edifies and entertains.

“Kevin Rush has mastered a seemingly forgotten art…the ability to write engaging, faith-infused historical fiction in the tradition of Taylor Caldwell.”

— Cary Solomon & Chuck Konzelman, screenwriters for God’s Not Dead

“There is much to be said for literary what-ifs and what-abouts concerning the small roles and players in history’s major dramas, and Kevin Rush does a masterful job in The Lance and The Veil, an exquisite literary exploration of some key players, big and small, in history’s greatest drama. Profound but mysterious, these figures of our religious culture are brought to life, are given real depth and character, in this very welcome and very gripping and very beautiful work of fiction. The Lance and The Veil should launch a genre, or at least be the first in a great many such works by a writer with a unique talent, happily shared in this wonderful and intelligent book.”

— Jack Fowler, Publisher, National Review

“My hope is that all will read this work and have a foundation conversion experience wherein they arrive at a deeper commitment to Christ!”

— Father Frank Pavone, Priests for Life

Why readers are giving The Lance and the Veil 5 Stars!

Great read!!!  By on October 5, 2015

Great read and a lot of fun reading this fictional tale during an historical time! Kudos to the author for a creative mix of historical context and character development. Have recommended to book clubs and readers I talk to. Highly recommend!

An Adventure and An Education! on August 19, 2015
I loved this book with the central character, Veronica, as heroine. From her teen years to adulthood, I connected and empathized with her. Her journey is thrilling as the author uses great creativity and finesse to introduce well-known biblical heroes and villains. I was captivated and astonished, filled with anticipation as to whom she would meet next. Mr. Rush also invested greatly to educate the reader on all things Roman, adding vivid imagery to his story. In addition to enjoying an adventure, the reader gains an education. This is a “must read” for high school and university religious curriculum and lovers of historical fiction. 5 stars!
Kevin Rush masterfully interweaves fact with fiction in this romance novel set during the time of Christ’s ministry, Passion, Death and Resurrection. He artfully takes peripheral historic figures from the Bible and imaginatively creates a fictional love story between the Centurion whose lance penetrated the side of Christ on the cross with “Veronica,” the young lady who gave a cloth to Christ to wipe his face as He processed to Mount Calvary with His cross. I was hooked from the beginning, and loved reading every page of this book. What will Kevin Rush write next? Whatever it is, I can’t wait to read it!

A Terrific Read By TJ Peterson on November 3, 2014

The Lance and The Veil crafts a fictional overlay on old historical traditions concerning Veronica, her iconic veil, and the lance used to pierce the side of the Crucified Christ. Well-researched yet well-paced, Rush follows the patrician Veronica on a journey taking her from the political intrigue of Rome into the seething caldron of Judea, where Zealots hide in the hills and wage an increasingly aggressive guerilla war against their Roman masters. Weaving history, (chaste) romance, culture, and theology, Rush has authored an excellent tale deserving of accolades from both Christians and historical fiction aficionados alike. I recommend it wholeheartedly.

inexplicable love, and an encounter with Jesus Christ  By Jeffrey W. Moryan on December 9, 2014

Kevin Rush’s novel, The Lance and the Veil: an adventure in the time of Christ is a must read for every book club! Rush masterfully tells the story of patrician Veronica, forced to flee the political intrigue of Imperial Rome for Judea, where her cousin’s husband, Pontius Pilate ruthlessly rules. Mistakenly thinking that Judea will bring her sanctuary, Veronica experiences unforeseen adventure and danger, inexplicable love, and an encounter with Jesus Christ as he is lead to his crucifixion, which shape the faith and life of Veronica, her love Longinus, and all that come in contact with both. Rush has deftly developed a depth to his characters, kept the pace of the book remarkably quick, and engaged his reader on several levels. This is an exceptional novel for those readers who enjoy well researched and written historical fiction. I cannot recommend this book highly enough!

An Intriguing and riveting story, and a must-read for  By f.j.giancola on November 3, 2014

An Intriguing and riveting story, and a must-read for lovers of historical fiction. Kevin Rush masterfully weaves the story of the main characters, Veronica and Longinus into the setting of Roman rule over Judea. The political, cultural, and religious issues of the times come to life as fate brings together the fictional and historical figures. Once you start reading it, you’ll find it very difficult to put down.L&V_Cover_final

Wonderful Historical Fiction By Therese M. Callaghan on December 11, 2014

Kevin Rush weaves a tale rich in history with well developed and intriguing characters. The book is very well researched and would be a great read for a fan of historical fiction, a book club or a high school religion class. It is a fantastic mix of religion, storytelling and history. An enjoyable read!

An excellent effort! Intelligent By Lawrence J. McWalters on December 28, 2014

An excellent effort! Intelligent, well-written and entertaining, this serves as a fine example of what historical fiction can be. Give a copy to a Dan Brown fan you know to show them what can be done by a writer who combines well-researched historical facts with a plausible story to produce something so much better than the write-by-numbers schlock popular today.

I found the novel fascinating. A wonderful description of life in Jesus’ time seen through the eyes those who would have experienced Roman life in early A.D. I could not put the book down! Highly recommend it!

Quick and enjoyable read. By Kathleen Rush on March 7, 2015

Great read; couldn’t put the book down. Kevin brought to life characters I yawned over in history and religion classes in school. Glad to revisit this time in history and have the opportunity to become absorbed in the brutality and compassion of that time while witnessing the complex emergence of faith and deceit. Kevin possesses a great craft that weaves themes within a context which moves forward and provokes our thoughts and feelings.

Vivid and compelling By Pomegranate on January 21, 2015

I’ve never read anything quite like this book. The events around Jerusalem, c. 33 A.D. gain immediacy in Kevin Rush’s compelling novel. Highly recommended.

A great historical novel with characters you love to love and love to hate. I also like the pearls of wisdom scattered throughout the book.

History and Fiction Come Together in the Time of Christ By Frank on May 7, 2015

This is a wonderful book that compares truthful historical drama with fiction in the time of Christ both before the crucifixion and through the resurrection and then growth of the Christian Church. The characters are well thought out and are then placed into historical events when you would least expect it. All in all a great piece of literature.

An inspiration By Christina Weigand  “Angels muse” on February 25, 2015

A compelling read. A nice insight into some of the people in Jesus’s time.

Author’s note, 3/14/2015: We’re grateful for the overwhelmingly positive reader reaction to The Lance and the Veil. However, it did come to our attention that, despite our concerted efforts, there was a smattering of typos in the initial November 2014 release. Although most of our readers seem to have been too engrossed in the story to notice, we wanted to improve the reading experience for all and so have combed through the book again. The edition available now has gone through additional proofing, but no other content changes were made.
